Strings Attached - Installation 2017
I really went for it in 2017. I’m very lucky to have a studio at Conway Mill as they are very supportive of the artists based there. In 2017 the management gave me permission to put on a solo exhibition/installation in what is known at the mill as the Drying Room, named that as this was where they used to dry the flax when it was a working linen mill.
This piece was about manipulation of forces unseen and our allusions of freedom of choice. 7 ceramic figures going about their business but attached to them are strings keeping them in the preferred position. Above faces watch.
I loved seeing it come together, there was a lot of throwing balls of twine up into the rafters to go over the beams and soon I got quite good at it. Saying that it also helped to have my mate and studio neighbour, Marie Louise Gormley, there on occasion to assist.
What follows is an array of images that illustrate in part the making towards and finally finished (kind of) exhibition ‘Strings Attached’.
Strings Attached Installation 2017 - I wanted a generic face of which I made a mould and then manipulate to transform into an individual. I still use the moulds today.
Strings Attached Installation 2017 - Being puppets I made moulds for the upper body, arms, legs and feet. the hands were made individually but the fingers were separated into parts.
Strings Attached Installation 2017 - FEET!
Strings Attached Installation 2017 - After the bisque firing.
Strings Attached Installation 2017 - FEET! - glazed and attached to wooden boards that I attempted to paint close to the colour of the stone floor slabs.
Strings Attached Installation 2017 - Used good thick galvanised wire to assemble each body.
Strings Attached Installation 2017 - Used porcelain slip, oxide wash and some devastatingly fabulous red glaze.
Strings Attached Installation 2017 - Loved this fella!
Strings Attached Installation 2017 - Some even had a fine set of teeth.
Strings Attached Installation 2017 - Mixed media has always been part of my practice.
Strings Attached Installation 2017 - Part of the installation was these four massive charcoal drawings. These were from ink sketches I made when on a trip to Italy. It was in the Siena Cathedral, Santa Maria Assunta.

Strings Attached Installation 2017 - The installation probably took about a week, or at least a good chunk of it.
